Gospel Mt 6:19-23

Jesus said to his disciples:

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,

where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal.

But store up treasures in heaven,

where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal.

For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.

"The lamp of the body is the eye.

If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light;

but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness.

And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be."

Reflection:

A constant reminder in the ministry of Jesus is of the nature of the Kingdom of God.  In all his teachings, he would finally shift focus of his disciples from the things of the world to those which are in heaven.  Today’s Gospel passage speaks of the treasure that we must store up in heaven where there are no possibilities of decay or stealing.

Our eyes which are lamps that fill our bodies with light ought to discern correctly the light that it seeks.  We are called to ensure that our eyes are healthy always so that our bodies will be filled with the light through it.  If the eyes can discern the light correctly, then it will also seek out the right treasures to store up in heaven.

Activity:

Let us find activities that will help us increase our treasure in heaven, those deeds that will be pleasing to God.
