Gospel Mt 5:17-19

Jesus said to his disciples:

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.

I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.

Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away,

not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter

will pass from the law,

until all things have taken place.

Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments

and teaches others to do so

will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven.

But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments

will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven."

Reflection:

Jesus explained the laws and the prophets with authority and in-depth knowledge.  Through the wisdom which came from the Holy Spirit, he was able to correctly explain the teachings and the laws to the people.

There may have been several times when he may have seemed like a rebel going against the ways of the Pharisees, the Sadducees, the chief priests and the scribes, because of the manner in which he explained spiritual matters.  In the Gospel today, he makes a very clear distinction between obeying and teaching the commandments and the rebellion against them by not adhering to them through actions or by abolishing them.

The key focus for Jesus is always the establishment of the reign of God.  Hence once again, he highlights the importance of his part in fulfilling the laws to the minutest detail.

Activity:
