10 May, 2024 | Friday of the Sixth Week of Easter | Optional Memorial - St Damien of Molakai - Patron of Lepers and Outcasts
Reading : Acts 18:9-18
Gospel Jn 16:20-23
Jesus said to his disciples:
"Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn,
while the world rejoices;
you will grieve, but your grief will become joy.
When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived;
but when she has given birth to a child,
she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy
that a child has been born into the world.
So you also are now in anguish.
But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice,
and no one will take your joy away from you.
On that day you will not question me about anything.
Amen, amen, I say to you,
whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you."
Reflections:
Jesus compares the Joy of a Woman who gives birth to a child after going through so much pain, she is full of joy and happiness. Similarly, Joy of seeing Christ and being with him brings tremendous joy as we are certain that He is with us.
Jesus assures his followers that their sorrow will be temporary because they will see him again. This promise of reunion suggests a future hope that transcends present suffering, emphasizing the importance of faith and trust in God's plan.
The joy that Jesus promises is not fleeting or dependent on external circumstances; rather, it is deep-rooted and enduring. This suggests a profound spiritual joy that remains unshaken by worldly trials and tribulations.
Overall, this passage encourages reflection on the transformative power of faith, the cyclical nature of human emotions, and the hope that sustains us through times of sorrow.
