 Reading 1 :Jon 3:1-10

Gospel Lk 11:29-32

While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them,

“This generation is an evil generation;

it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,

except the sign of Jonah.

Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,

so will the Son of Man be to this generation.

At the judgment

the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation

and she will condemn them,

because she came from the ends of the earth

to hear the wisdom of Solomon,

and there is something greater than Solomon here.

At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation

and condemn it,

because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,

and there is something greater than Jonah here.”

Reflection:

Throughout His ministry Jesus had performed many miracles over nature, over diseases and even over demons. Yet, people of His time failed to see that all they need already stands in front of them in the person of Jesus, someone greater than Jonah, someone greater than Solomon, and greater than all prophets of Israel.

At times we too are arrogant enough to demand for proof of His existence and His love. We are reminded through the Gospel that the Lord has already given us all we need in and through the church -- the community of believers. The greatest sign of the Lord’s presence, a sacred sign is the Eucharist, and the other sacraments; we find the presence of Jesus in the living word of God, among us and in the beautiful creation around us.

Activity:

Recall the miracles of God in our lives, trusting that Jesus the greatest sign given to us is always with us through the Holy Spirit, every moment of our life.
