8 January, 2024 | The Baptism of our Lord, Feast
Readings: Is 42:1-4, 6-7 , Ps 29:1-2, 3-4, 3, 9-10,
Gospel Mk 1:7-11
This is what John the Baptist proclaimed:
“One mightier than I is coming after me.
I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.
I have baptized you with water;
he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee
and was baptized in the Jordan by John.
On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open
and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him.
And a voice came from the heavens,
“You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
Reflections:
In today's Gospel, John the Baptist's statement highlights his humility and recognition of Jesus' superiority. It is important for us to maintain humility and acknowledge that our role is to point others to Jesus, who is more powerful and worthy of all honour and praise. At his baptism the voice from heaven declares God's love for Jesus. This affirmation demonstrates the Father's love for his Son and provides encouragement to Jesus as He begins his public ministry. We are called to be humble, recognizing our role in pointing others to Jesus. By teaching about the Trinity and affirming God's love and pleasure in individuals. Let us encourage and support to those entrusted to our care, for their deeper relationship with God.
Activity:
Focus on the importance of baptism and other sacraments for our children or siblings and prepare them to receive it on time. Make them aware of the transformative work of the Holy Spirit in their life.
