4 December, 2023 | Monday of the First Week of Advent | For some parts of India - Solemnity of St Francis Xavier

Gospel Mt 8:5-11

When Jesus entered Capernaum,

a centurion approached him and appealed to him, saying,

"Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully."

He said to him, "I will come and cure him."

The centurion said in reply,

"Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof;

only say the word and my servant will be healed.

For I too am a man subject to authority,

with soldiers subject to me.

And I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes;

and to another, 'Come here,' and he comes;

and to my slave, 'Do this,' and he does it."

When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him,

"Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith.

I say to you, many will come from the east and the west,

and will recline with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob

at the banquet in the Kingdom of heaven."

Reflections:

Advent is a time when we especially reflect on the mystery of God becoming a human being, and dwelling with humanity in physical form in Jesus Christ. Jesus, lived, and died, and rose again, and ascended to the Father. But for love of us, he chose to stay on, in the form of Bread and Wine—the Eucharist. This is our faith. But do we prepare to receive the Lord in Holy Communion; and do we have the humble attitude of the Centurion, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed”? Or are we complacent, thinking we are worthy, holy enough to receive the Lord in Holy Communion anytime and every time? Perhaps the Lord might look at us and discover that we don’t have the needed ‘garment’ for the celebration. . . .

Activity

Let us spend some time before the Blessed Sacrament and in all humility admit before the Lord, our unworthiness, our sins and failures, believing that the Lord will make us whole.

Solemnity of St Francis Xavier, Missionary priest of India and East Asia

Gospel : Luke 10: 1-16

After this the Lord appointed seventy-two[a] others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3 Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’ 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you. 7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8 Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. 9 Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

Woe to Unrepentant Cities
13 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more bearable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades.
16 “The one who hears you hears me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

Reflections:

Today the Church in India celebrates the solemnity of St Francis Xavier whose body lies revered in Goa, in Bom Jesu church. Unlike the simple fishermen Jesus chose at the beginning of Christianity, Francis Xavier was highly educated and ambitious too. But God chose him to be his instrument to bring many to himself and transformed him into one of the greatest missionaries in the history of the Church. Determined to bring as many to Christ, he travelled far and wide, preaching, converting, catechising, building churches, baptising, and serving the poor, the sick and needy, working miracles among people. His work was so extensive in the East, that he has been referred to as another Saint Paul and the “Apostle to the East”.
As the New Evangelisation calls each of us to deepen our faith, believe in the Gospel message and go forth to proclaim the Gospel to all, may St Francis Xavier intercede for us and pray with us that there will be many labourers to work in the harvest of the Lord.

Activity:

Let us spend some time during the day to pray for vocations to priesthood and religious life.
