Gospel Lk 10:38-42
Looking for books on prayer services?
Jesus entered a village
where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.
She had a sister named Mary
who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.
Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said,
"Lord, do you not care
that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?
Tell her to help me."
The Lord said to her in reply,
"Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.
There is need of only one thing.
Mary has chosen the better part
and it will not be taken from her."
Reflections:
As often happens in our life, Mary is sitting at the feet of Jesus listening; Martha is busy preparing to attend to the physical needs of her guest-friend Jesus, which is also necessary and important. She is not happy that her sister is spending time listening to Jesus. And Jesus promptly calls Martha’s attention to the need of centering her attention on Jesus, and listening to the word of life. When we sit listening to Jesus he guards us from worries and anxieties. Martha's anxiety about many things distracts her from the one thing necessary, that is centering her heart on Jesus , listening to him and hearing the Word of God. Mary is doing just that.
Activity:
Spend some extra time in prayer at the feet of the Master Jesus.
