Jesus said to them,
"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!
For if the mighty deeds done in your midst
had been done in Tyre and Sidon,
they would long ago have repented,
sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon
at the judgment than for you.
And as for you, Capernaum, 'Will you be exalted to heaven?
You will go down to the netherworld.'
Whoever listens to you listens to me.
Whoever rejects you rejects me.
And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me."
Reflections
The message of Jesus is not always accepted. The disciples were given a warning regarding this. Jesus had come as God's spokesperson to extend God's offer of life and peace. Now Jesus is sending his disciples on his behalf. Those who accept or reject the message of the disciples would be accepting or rejecting God himself. Jesus warns us of the nearness and danger of judgment, and calls us to repentance. He expresses his anguish and pity for those who refuse the salvation he offers. He is calling our attention to how sin can blind us in the face of God's mercy and forgiveness.
