 Gospel Jn 1:47-51

Put Music Here ----

Gospel Text:

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him,

"Here is a true child of Israel.

There is no duplicity in him."

Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?"

Jesus answered and said to him,

"Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree."

Nathanael answered him,

"Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."

Jesus answered and said to him,

"Do you believe

because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree?

You will see greater things than this."

And he said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you,

you will see heaven opened

and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."

Reflections:

Today, we celebrate the feast of the Archangels. Who can perceive the presence of angels? In the Gospel passage we reflect upon today, there is a meaningful exchange between Nathaniel and Jesus. When Jesus tells Nathaniel, "I saw you under the fig tree," it carries a deeper significance. Traditionally, Jews used the space under the fig tree for studying the Torah, indicating Nathaniel's keen interest in learning about God's word. Jesus implies that those who earnestly seek and explore the words of God will have the ability to perceive the presence of angels. Therefore, it prompts us to ask ourselves whether we genuinely search for and engage with the word of God. If we do, then undoubtedly, we will be granted the insight to witness the angels around us.
