 Gospel Lk 7:31-35

Teach your youngsters about humility

Gospel Text:

Jesus said to the crowds:

"To what shall I compare the people of this generation?

What are they like?

They are like children who sit in the marketplace and call to one another,

'We played the flute for you, but you did not dance.

We sang a dirge, but you did not weep.'

For John the Baptist came neither eating food nor drinking wine,

and you said, 'He is possessed by a demon.'

The Son of Man came eating and drinking and you said,

'Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard,

a friend of tax collectors and sinners.'

But wisdom is vindicated by all her children."

Reflection:

The contrast between the ministry styles of John and Jesus showcases the diverse ways in which God communicates with humanity. Despite the differences in their approaches, the people found fault with both of them. Hence, Jesus compares the people of his generation to children playing in the marketplace. Like children who cannot agree on whether to play a joyful tune or a mournful one. The people cannot accept John's message of repentance and asceticism nor Jesus' message of love, acceptance and forgiveness. This reflects the fickle and inconsistent nature of humanity when it comes to accepting God's message. People often find excuses to reject God's message or messengers, no matter how it is presented.

Activity:

Nurture a sense of humility as you seek to comprehend the ways of God.
