Gospel Mt 6:19-23
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal.
But store up treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.
“The lamp of the body is the eye.
If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light;
but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness.
And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be.”
Reflections
Storing up treasures on earth
is a fruitless enterprise because these possessions are vulnerable to decay and
loss. Jesus wants our hearts to be eternally focused. He knew that obsessing
over temporary things will rob us of our joy. Jesus instructs us to seek those
things that will last forever and not give ourselves over to things that fade
away.
If you treasure something to
yourself, you have your affections, your passions, your heart set on it. Its
presence in your life is of supreme importance to you. You will put in a lot of
time and effort in acquiring, maintaining and keeping it. Jesus points out to
His readers the superiority of the heavenly treasures and so encourages them to
set their hearts on those.
