21 May, 2013 | The Ascension of the Lord
Gospel Mt 28:16-20
The eleven disciples went to Galilee,
to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them.
When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted.
Then Jesus approached and said to them,
“All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”
Reflections
The Ascension is the end of Jesus journey on earth and the beginning of the new mission for his disciples. Witnessing his ascension to heaven strengthened the disciples’ faith in him. The one whom they witnessed being crucified on the cross unto death, is now standing amidst them commanding them to go on a mission in the name of the Trinity and not just around Jerusalem but to the whole world. Keeping in mind the mission statement of Jesus the apostles boldly proclaimed his message of love and forgiveness to the world bearing witness even to the point of martyrdom.
